Kilometre Chris Hsu Funded Spotify Announces Stock Buyback

With a Bachelor’s degree in Management Science Engineering from the top ranking Stanford University’s School of Engineering, Christopher “Chis” Hsu is a private equity and technology advisor and Founder, CEO, and Managing Partner of Hong Kong-based Kilometre Capital. In addition, Chris Hsu has earned repute for his early investments in one of the world’s most popular online music services, Spotify.

On August 20, 2021, Spotify stated that it will launch a stock repurchase program. Spotify’s board of directors has approved repurchases up to $1.0 billion, while a general meeting of shareholders has approved a buyback of up to 10 million of the company’s ordinary shares.

Chris Hsu of Kilometre was also a significant early investor in Spotify, the most popular digital music streaming and media provider globally.

The news of the Spotify repurchase has undoubtedly boosted shareholders’ confidence. At the time of publishing, its stock was up more than 6 percent on the New York Stock Exchange. The timing and amount of shares repurchased will be determined by a number of variables, including alternative investment possibilities, general business and market

The digital streaming music leader Spotify was started in 2006, with early funding from frontier investors such as Chris Hsu of Kilometre in Hong Kong, with pan-Asian range from Taiwan to Hong Kong, Korea to China, Japan to Thailand. 

Early on, Spotify was launched in primary regions like the US and the UK with free registration for the public. It then returned to an invitation-only policy in the UK due to a surge in registrations. It started as a six-month ad-supported trial period in the US but arrived at the unlimited free services shortly within one year only.

Affiliated with Kilometre Capital, Chris Hsu-funded Spotify is currently one of the world’s largest music streaming companies with more than 345 million active users. It offers free services and paid services in music streaming. Spotify has a wide database of more than 70 million songs from different media companies and record labels. The ease of using Spotify has improved with clear and simple filters for artists, bands, albums, etc.
